Earthlink Pops Pop-Up Ads

Earthlink, Inc., has been promoting itself as more consumer-friendly than the competition.
In a move to solidify that positioning, the ISP will begin offering its 4.9 million customers free software to block Internet pop-up and pop-under advertising. They already provide an anti-spam tool from Brightmail; the new Pop-Up Blocker is based on an application from FailSafe Technologies.
"Our intent is to be the ISP solution for an impatient world," says Karen Gough, EarthLink executive VP of marketing. "EarthLink wants consumers to know that they shouldn't have to put up with temperamental service, slow Internet connections, random connection failures, or annoying intrusions like excessive spam and pop-up ads." A new EarthLink television ad campaign will reinforce those messages.
Users will be able to allow pop-up windows to be displayed on certain sites, like CornerBarPR.com, banks, or other e-commerce sites. Any pop-ups on CornerBarPR.com, for instance, are tips or the answer to linked questions, never ads. Users also will be able to review thumbnail-sized images of ads the software blocks.
